چکیده

DISTINCT POPULATIONS THAT REPLACE EACH OTHER GEOGRAPHICALLY were recognized either as full species or as lower-level ‘‘varieties’’ or ‘‘forms’’ under the original Linnaean taxonomy. In zoology, a practical resolution of this ambiguity took place largely between about 1880 and 1920, with the recognition of a single additional taxonomic rank, the geographic subspecies (while in botany, many infraspecific ranks remain valid). Since the 1980s, the fashion has changed once more. Some systematists are again recognizing geographical replacement forms as full species, even when they blend together at their boundaries.

Mechanisms of male sterility in hybrids of the Drosophila paulistorum group.

ROSOPHILA PAULISTORUM is a superspecies composed of five semispecies (the Centroamerican, Amazonian, Andean, Orinocan, and Interior), and a heterogeneous group of Transitional populations (DOBZHANSKY, PAVLOVSKY and EHRMAN 1969; SPASSKY et al. 1971 ) . External morphological, physiological, and ecological differences between the semispecies are too small to be of use in distinguishing the semisp...

Infectious Speciation Revisited: Impact of Symbiont-Depletion on Female Fitness and Mating Behavior of Drosophila paulistorum

The neotropical Drosophila paulistorum superspecies, consisting of at least six geographically overlapping but reproductively isolated semispecies, has been the object of extensive research since at least 1955, when it was initially trapped mid-evolution in flagrant statu nascendi. In this classic system females express strong premating isolation patterns against mates belonging to any other se...

Molecular evolution of the period gene in Drosophila athabasca.

We measured nucleotide variability within and between the three semispecies of the Drosophila athabasca complex, at the period (per) gene by using a polymerase chain reaction-based four-cutter restriction-enzyme analysis. The levels of polymorphism varied considerably between the three semispecies. Our results for per, combined with previous data for X-linked allozymes, suggest that the X chrom...

Streptococcal L-forms isolated from Drosophila paulistorum semispecies cause sterility in male progeny.

The Drosophila paulistorum complex contains six semispecies that do not normally interbreed. In the laboratory, crosses between semispecies produce fertile daughters and sterile sons. Microbial endosymbionts have been observed in all D. paulistorum flies that display this male sterility. Streptococcal L-forms have been isolated from the Andean-Brazilian (Mesitas) and Transitional (Santa Marta) ...

Mitochondrial DNA diversification among the subspecies of the Silver and Kalij Pheasants, Lophura nycthemera and L. leucomelanos , Phasianidae

The taxonomic status of the pheasant superspecies Lophura leucomelanos and Lophura nycthemera has been unclear since 1948. Molecular techniques provided the opportunity to clarify the situation. Using sequences of mitochondrial DNA (800 nucleotides from the D-loop, plus 400 from the cyt b ) from 49 specimens belonging to 10 subspecies (plus two outgroups), we constructed a phylogeny of the subs...
